Bécalos is an education scholarship program managed by the Mexican Bankers Association and Fundación Televisa that raises funds from individuals, bank costumers (via ATM operation) and matched by the corresponding banking institutions. Launched in 2006 in partnership with Fundación Televisa, the program has trained 31,000 teachers to-date.
The grant partially supports 964 public school teachers and principals from the Program Bécalos- Formando Formadores teacher training programs in public elementary and middle schools in the states of Chiapas (138), Michoacán (186), and Mexico City (640). The program has focused on the areas of reading comprehension, math, science, educational competencies. The 2009 edition of the Education at a Glance Report by the OECD shows an average classroom of basic education in Mexico is 28 students. This means that the direct impact of sponsoring 964 teachers benefited 26,992 students each year.
