Program: Enseña Por México/Teach for Mexico
HELP USMF TRANSFORM EDUCATION IN MEXICO, OPPORTUNITIES WITH ENSEÑA POR MÉXICO (TEACH FOR MÉXICO)
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The Enseña por México, program works to improve the quality of education in Mexico while creating social engagement among college graduates in Mexico. Currently, tens of thousands of low-income children in Mexico lack the knowledge and skills they need to become productive citizens. Students from Mexico score among the lowest in reading and math of all 15-year olds as measured by PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment and 50% percent do not meet the assessment’s basic skill levels (compared to an average of 19 percent across other OECD nations). Deprived of the chance to access and pursue the same life opportunities as their more affluent peers, disadvantaged children remain caught in a cycle of poverty.
Enseña por México, AC, brings the Teach for All and Teach for America models to schools and students across Mexico. In September 2013, the first group of Enseña por México corp members (Profesionales de Enseña por México, known as PEMs for short) began working with students in the states of Puebla and Estado de Mexico. These PEMs have been received enthusiastically.
